Staff Midwife, Birth Center

Angela is excited about the opportunity to join the Birth Detroit team as a Birth Center Midwife. She brings over 8 years of experience and is a creative, organized, and disciplined advocate. She looks forward to the continued advocacy that this role will bring, allowing her to continue to be the worker bee that she is.

Angela is a native of Mississippi. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2002 from Xavier University. That same year Angela relocated to metro Detroit. She received her BSN from the University of Detroit, Mercy in 2007 before joining Henry Ford Hospital.  Angela began her nursing career in inpatient Cardiology and later Cardiovascular Surgery.  In 2012 Angela’s passion for women’s health led her to embark on her journey to become a Certified Nurse Midwife.  Angela continued her nursing career in cardiovascular surgery part-time while pursuing her midwifery degree at Wayne State University. After receiving her MSN in Midwifery in 2014, she joined the Wayne State University Physician Group Division of Midwifery.

In March 2018, Angela began working with Ascension Providence and the Providence Nurse Midwives.  As an advocate for normal physiologic birth, Angela believes every woman deserves a midwife. Angela learned and grew tremendously at Providence through her work in the Alternative Birth Center. Angela’s personal philosophies align with the mission, vision, and values of Birth Detroit. She is excited to work towards transforming the spirit of care in Detroit.

Angela served as the Secretary of the Michigan Affiliate of the American College of Nurse Midwives from 2015-2018.  This leadership opportunity was an enlightening experience. She learned a great deal about the legislative side of the business and the importance of advocacy for the profession of nursing as well as midwifery. She plans to continue to advocate for women and families in her community.

Angela Foster is the Co-Founder of Metro Detroit Midwives of Color (MDMOC) – a non-profit organization in Metro Detroit that is focused on reducing the prevalence of health disparities among minority women by infiltrating the community with relevant programs that enlighten and empower women.

In her spare time, Angela enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and working in her yard.
